Good stuff! It would help the group to discuss this exercise and learn from it if you could give us the learning objectives by day and the overall objectives. If you can explain, without giving away specific details, the event, that would provide a great learning point for the group as well.
It seems that your team did not suffer anything to make you question members or their dedication. The fact that the team’s moral was affected but not the team bond is significant and a learning point that could be discussed here.
I would also like to learn more about the Robinson Caruso effect that you experienced. You may be onto something that will aid others in forming teams. Some do not see the need to form teams or think that team building can be done on the fly. Your post sets the stage to dispel that fallacy.

The Robinson Caruso effect was something new, I didn’t expect or realize i had developed. The name was just something I used in the AAR because it seemed fitting to me. The thoughts in my head weren’t going any farther then my head and I had to make a pronounced focused effort to convey plans and orders. Even then I was having trouble and forgetting critical details that made me go back. For the most part of the early 2000s i ran two survival teams that lasted years each and it seemed i had forgot all of the SOPs for operation in a civilian group. Then they were second nature motions that were automatic back then. Here in Alaska I spend more time out in one week then most do in a year. 99.9% of this time is running solo or Im with my dog scouting shit.
When I’m alone I think, observe, weigh options and formulate plans and just act on it and roll with it as it relates to me, the one man patrol. When I was experiencing this Robinson Caruso thing out with the team it reminded me of a documentary of Robinson Caruso and how he spoke in Goat gibberish when the English rescued him. It was his way of operating/dealing/adapting when he was isolated. His only company were goats that were stranded there too. I realized that I too had adapted a method to operate alone..It’s thoroughly in my head. Its never caused me a problem and I have always been successful in any objective i set for myself. But alone has many limitations in Alaska.
Regardless we made it work and it worked well for 3 guys out together for the very first time. In the end this nameless monster that ended the drill has solidified the team more and brought a determination to the surface I had not expected to see. I dont see it as a failure per say but rather a motivator for the future. Sorry, but I cant elaborate further on this faceless nameless monster…
The learning objective for the most part was a series of small tasks to see how we all got on together. There was structured team tasks and individual survival tasks they could do for themselves when we made RON. IMO, Its best to take it slow when you get started. Ive seen guys get so pissed out in the woods that they get a shit attitude and get to fighting from the shock of it all, so I wanted to go slow on the team to see what we had before i turned any wrenches. It really was as simple as that. There was no grand objective to reach other then seeing that no one was fighting or bringing an individualist attitude to the team, and that everyone went home alive. Everyone got on well and we seem to have the makings for a good team. I look at it as the crawling portion of one day the grand objective being that we are running..

With all the experience-skillset & time to prepare that you invest in training, it is interesting how many times Alaska kicks you in the gonads. I mean no disrespect, quite the contrary it illustrates the short life expediency the inexperienced hoards will enjoy as they attempt to escape Los’Anchorage into to the hills & mountains.
Bergmann, we don’t like each other…….but that does not mitigate the respect I have for you.
Good Info Bergmann very informative site and activities…Like your tailoring of camo and tarps and zeltbahn to the foliage in your area.. In Southeast AK I use a lot of oak leaf and fleck tarn for similar reasons.

YT: I do like Flek too but I cannot ever find decent prices or decent supplies of it so I went with DPM. For me, IMO it works better anyhow. Plus its just sexy as hell..No really, I like DPM. The durability, cut/fit and cargo capacity of DPM clothing is the tits. The price is usually pretty good to when it can be found, though I stocked up on a lot when I was in the UK where its much cheaper and commonly found..Thanks for the compliment and greetings from South Central…..
