Patriot Dawn: The Resistance Rises

As you may be aware if you follow the blog, I have gone full time with the MVT training business. With the effort and time invested at the training site, improving it and getting it ready for the Combat Patrol Class, I have got somewhat behind on writing the sequel to ‘Patriot Dawn: The Resistance Rises.’ The book is planned and is several chapters in, but it remains to be fully put down on paper.

There is only one of me, and not enough time in the day! Starting today, I am dialing back in other areas, including blog posts, in order to launch fully into the writing. Max Velocity Tactical is both a book writing and a tactical training venture. It was originally through royalties earned from my books that I was able to make the initial investment into the equipment needed to start the training site and run classes.

So, until the word fully gets out about the training classes, and they truly become a full time thing, I have to maintain the writing in order to put food on the table. Family First, despite my continuing intent to be a training resource. My long term intent is to remain full time at the training, in order to provide the training service. I really think that the tactical classes have become, and continue to evolve as, a really good vehicle for training for the armed civilian. I am proud of where we are.

In the meantime, I would ask that if you have any means, forum, soapbox, whatever, to put the word out about the classes, please do so. And thanks to WRSA for being so excellent at supporting  my efforts.

As a look forward into 2014, now that we have the Combat Patrol class up and running, I am looking to a Combat Patrol II as posted at the end of this guest post on ‘Long Range Shooting.‘

I do have a post cooking in the back of my mind about rucks and living in the field. Maybe later in the week when I have satisfied the urgent desire to get more of this book on paper! I purchased a really good bit of software, called ‘Dragon,’ that allows me to dictate the book onto the computer. Great for a two fingered typing knuckledragger! ;-)

  1. Thanks for your efforts, Max. I forwarded my CRCD AAR to my gun club newsletter editor. The newsletter, which has a 700 member readership, will include the article next month. I hope you get a few students from it.

    Some of us haven’t done this for a long time; others never.

    As nice as a motel may be, using your classes to learn to efficiently live in the field is important as well as shooting, moving and communicating.

    Some are blessed with local orienteering clubs to help brush up on (or learn) land navigation skills. They might also be a source for new folks.

      Did four miles today in 54:58 with the ILBE (at 55lbs.) that Max hates. It really isn’t so bad and it depends how you pack it. The need to leave enough room for minimum 3 days chow requires more work on my part.

        • Well, I think I figured out a fix. I had packed a woobie in addition to my fart sack. Also had some extra stove fuel. I’ll do with one. Don’t need both so that makes room for a few MREs. I also picked up a few used gunner pouches so I’ll move the ammo out to those which MOLLE to each side. I’ll post a pick later for those who haven’t seen the beautiful ILBE! Next ruck I’ll use my ALICE frame and compare.

      • I dont know what an ILBE is so I got nothing to say..LOL I use a bastardization of ALICE and PLCE webbing or PLCE vest

        Good to hear someone else talk the talk on PT! Packing a ruck is as personal as its terrain/ season/mission specific. Some folks require more or less kit then others as well..

        Mine was loaded for life. It was as tall as the tire on my truck and more then twice as thick.

        Cj and I went back up there today to look for more cache spots and to scout a new route. Just patrol packs ..Terrain is punishing.

        I didn’t kill the Mountain goat. I found it but i took it horns..If this was a real situation he would have been eaten. He wasn’t too far gone..

        • On eating the goat; what do you use as your go-no-go gauge? I spoke with a vet once about eating down animals. She thought so long as the meat did not have a foul oder, it was probably ok. For her, internal organs were a no-go on any down animal.

          I had one of my horned Dexter bulls go down, for no apparent reason. He died within 12 hrs of my daily herd count. I thought I might be able to salvage something, he was ~700#. I hauled him out of the enclosure and hung him up with the tractor, skinned him out. When I gutted him out, I found that he had a huge internal infection from multiple gorings. Horned bulls are always testing the pecking order, but I had never seen him get gored. The stench from his abdominal cavity was beyond what dead smells like. Every quarter had a foul oder. I salvaged nothing. But with no prospects of food, would I have tried it? Not sure. You could kill the bacteria, but does the infection leave toxins behind that aren’t destroyed by cooking? I never could get an answer I trusted on that.

          • Id use a few visual gauges. Smell, maggots, color, texture of any meat id want to harvest, whether the hair was falling out in clumps and most importantly, how hungry and off i would be. He looked quite fresh and appeared quite dry. He was located in some seriously strong wind so there was no way to gauge smell out right. I tried several time even sniffing inside his mouth but i just smelled bloody meat smell. Even as I put his head on my weapon to make a picture I still smelled nothing as I moved him. I chopped his horns off with my axe and I still smelled nothing. There were no visible signs of heavy scavengers. He was missing an eye and it looked like something started to work on the back end. He was definitely a candidate for consumption. and I saw no flies or maggots. I suspect he was quite fresh. My friend said he smelled a bad odor a few times but I didn’t smell anything.

            I would never recommend eating an animal you find but survival is survival and you do what you have to do, just be prepared to pay for the mistakes one will inevitably make…

        • Wow… only suggestion would be to pack higher and tighter. The lake picture looks like you would make a good teeter totter. Lots of strain on the body. Of all the things that we do with our load outs.. packing our ruck is the most personal. I find that the older I get, the less I need… because I can’t carry it! Ha! Load light, freeze at night has been my mantra for almost a decade and now in my mid 50’s… 40 lbs max if I want to go all day and be able to set up shop at the end. The loadout always seems to evolve.

          • I dont pack light in Alaska. Patrol pack light would probably be an over night load in places with better climates. You get hurt and cant move, you’ll die. You need kit here. I even carry signal flares and a signal panel and a good whistle.

            Kits is needed, Its as simple as that. And that’s just to survive. Add in fighting kit and you’re in the crush zone of kit loads. That’s how it is. In my area it can go to a nice warm summer day in the 80’sF and drop to the 30s in hours while pissing down rain all day. Ive been in wet snow storms in July. This place is crazy.

            I see some of these eco idiots out there sometimes in spadex and wearing a fanny pack, alone, while walking with ear phones in their heads. They just dont get it and when the moment arrives that it dawns on them it will probably be too late..

  4. Max, yes please take the time you need to take care of business.

    Once the forum is up we can lower your internet workload even more keeping you free to write brilliant books and the occasional brilliant tactics article.

    I view this communities job to be to do as much as we can, to keep your mind free from the pedestrian stuff so you can focus on the big stuff.

  5. Just finished Enemies Foreign and Domestic and it mad me appreciate Max’s book even more! While not a bad read Max’s book is LOADED with info and insights as well as leaving out the sexual descriptions that made me go back and check the author on more than on occasion.

    Can’t wait for the second book and suggest pre-sales as well as autographed versions. You know stuff like “Till Valhalla!” or “Live free die hard”…or “kill all the bastards and let God sort ’em out.”
