Schoolhouse Winter Warmth Improvements

In discussing with some students attendance over the winter months, I have had comments about them bringing their wives to the effect that “She would rather die!”

Well, there is only so much I can do about that. At the Combat Shooting range site, I had already installed a fire pit surrounded by picnic tables so students can warm up between classes. At the tactical ranges schoolhouse, which is an open pavilion (air-conditioned!), we only had a burn barrel, which wasn’t really very effective. So this weekend we did some clearing, made some benches, and put in another fire pit with some stacks of logs.

It’s a great little area. I had to drag myself away from the fire on Sunday.

  1. Thank you for the improvements. I’d still like a hot tub… May I suggest some canvas tarps that could be rolled up. Lowes painting department for cheap. They are good wind/rain breakers and could easily be spray painted camo. I use them for my animal shelters in the winter.

  2. This reminds me of a little-known bit of trivia:

One of the Finns’ secret weapons that contributed to their devastation of the Russian forces during the Winter War and the Continuation War was their use of tactical saunas. Yes I said that.

Beyond the obvious benefits of improving morale and staving off hypothermia, the saunas disinfected and disinfested the soldiers’ bodies and gear (in separate saunas). Furthermore, the steam helps clear all manner of upper respiratory infections, and the overheating stimulates ones’ immune system. So while the Russians were busy keeling over from all manner of malady, lice-borne and otherwise, the Finns were feeling fine. Presumably this gave them the free time and wherewithal to decimate Stalin’s hordes like a sushi happy hour at the local lesbian bar.

AFAIK Finland is the only country that ever successfully used a winter against the Russians in the context of a war (let alone two wars!)

  3. I will pass this on to my wife that said “I would rather die” when I suggested a mid-January class…
