How to Protect your Family using Tactical Training.

I have been a soldier in some form all my adult life, and I have a depth of tactical knowledge that I have a desire to pass on to others, and luckily for my training business I have the ability to instruct. This means I can bring clarity to those who desire to learn Small Unit Tactics (SUT) as one of the many skills that you will need facing some form of collapse of law and order. However, it does appear “some” or “many” people out there are making the simple mistake of thinking that with the subject of security and tactics, they can simply “tick the box”. Preparing for the protection of your family cannot be simply taken care of by having guns; not in the same way that hunger can be taken care of by stocking food.

I have also noticed that even as Max Velocity Tactical has become better at what we do since I started the training school in 2013, overall demand for tactical training has fallen away somewhat. I am still trying to understand that, given that we are not in a safe place as a society. I suspect that financially people are suffering, and as a result, optional training such as MVT offers is less of a practical option for people.

Here is a historical anecdote. In my opinion, back in the day (such as at the time of the French and Indian War) people survived in communities. There was less about being an individual and more about surviving with others. As such, there was also less about the right to bear arms being a ‘right’ and more about it being a ‘duty.’ As such, men would show for church on Sunday carrying their weapons and they would drill with them. They would face the need to be called out to defend their community in case of an enemy raid. At that time, insufferable egos would not be tolerated, and peoples ‘right’ to do whatever they wanted would be subsumed by the need to protect family as part of the need to protect community. Duty. Given that our current society is much more tenuous than people think, it won’t take much before we are back to that state of affairs. Given the way people are nowadays, that is going to be a hard pill to swallow as they realize they need to work together!

It is simply not sufficient to exercise your right to bear arms and own guns, without being tactically proficient. Even for the good shots, that is not the same as being able to perform tactically. The kind of tactical challenges that you will face post-SHTF will be in a different league to, for example, confronting an intruder in the dead of night with your handgun or shotgun. Think marauding gangs of looters, going from house to house, raping and killing. Even if you have a remote retreat, you will need tactical know-how at some point.

I hope to contribute to help with this shortfall. The training business Max Velocity Tactical has been running since 2013 and we have become better at what we do over the years. If you can, sign up for a class. We run two strands of training, one being live fire, and the other being airsim. HEAT 1 Combat Tactics is the entry class for the live fire strand, and we won’t have another of those classes until next spring. But for those who have completed HEAT 1, we do have HEAT 2 Combat Patrol and HEAT 3 Night Operations coming up. Click on the training calendar below and find the available class.

On the airsim (airsoft) side, we run a strand of classes that is highly beneficial to your overall tactical ability, and uses a live Opposing Force (OPFOR) to create missions that are as close to reality as we can get. Live fire and airsim are mutually beneficial, one teaches use of live rounds in real tactical situations (battle inoculation), while airsim teaches use against a live OPFOR where casualties will be taken unless you do it right. We specifically have a Squad Tactics Class coming up on the 18-21 September. MVT offers this four day class which are immersive scenario based training events utilizing airsim professional training weapons. The HEAT Squad Tactics classes involve the practical application of team based combat tactics in realistic training scenarios against a dedicated opposing force (OPFOR). Force on Force events are an excellent training opportunity as part of the MVT training progression – these events fill a vital role in developing your tactical effectiveness, with a focus on teamwork, leadership, and team communication along with effective tactical application. You can be a riflemen, or volunteer for team leader or squad leader positions. Either way, you will learn tactics on the class.

If you decide to take on the ability to defend your family while improving your own abilities, if you decide to view SUT as a DUTY and not simply a RIGHT, then you will need to develop the warrior mindset. That is not an easy thing to do in today’s society. You need to have a mindset of never quitting. You will need to work on your physical fitness. You will be on a journey to better yourself.

For those of you who would like some background reading to fill in the gaps in your tactical knowledge, I have published two manuals as well as three novels. For those of you who cannot currently afford tactical training, these can be read to get an understanding of tactics, including the novels, which include tactics within them.

‘Contact: A Tactical Manual for Post-Collapse Survival’ was my first manual and includes both tactics and prepping tips:

‘Tactical Manual: Small Unit Tactics’ focuses in more depth on the tactical side and omits prepping:

I now have three novels published, the most recent being ‘The Storm Rages: Dragon Rising’ which is the third in the trilogy. Due to the way the scenario has developed in the books, this novel is about full-on war against the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) who have invaded the U.S. and the heroes are fighting back against them.

The first novel is ‘Patriot Dawn: The Resistance Rises.’ The original idea for this book was to fictionalize the way ‘Contact’ is written, and tell the tale of a family in the collapse, then grow the story as they end up in a resistance organization and the tactical scenarios grow into full-on battles with the Regime.

The second book the trilogy is ‘Patriot Rising: The Unbroken.’

I wrote the manuals and novels, and I started this blog and will train others, all with the general mission statement in my mind of ‘keeping the good folks alive.’  The idea is to allow access to these skills to law abiding honest prepper types. With the manuals, it is the result of a consideration of a societal collapse and the civil shift and aftermath that would impact individuals and families who are intent on survival. The aim is to provide information to enhance security, tactics and survival skills of law-abiding citizens who are faced with civil disorder, lawlessness, violence and physical threat in a post-collapse environment. The information is derived from years of experience gained from service with elite forces followed by years of employment as a security contractor in hostile environments including Iraq and Afghanistan. It is a distillation of military and security training, principles, and tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) adapted to the threat and environment anticipated in this type of scenario in order to provide knowledge needed to train to survive in a world turned upside down. It is no longer just survival of the fittest but survival of those prepared.

The manuals will take you from self-defense as an individual, team and family, both pre and post collapse, and move on to tactics, techniques, procedures and training that can be used by tactical teams that you may need to form in order to survive. In a serious post-event scenario, one of total collapse with several months or years before recovery, families, groups and communities may be forced to create such tactical defense forces to protect personnel, loved ones and resources against marauders. There is something in this manual for both the tactical newbie and the military veteran.

Reading through forums and articles I see many of the same questions out there about what techniques to use, how to defend yourself, your loved ones and your home, and similar. I hope to answer these questions. Also, the manuals takes you from tactics for survival of yourself and your family, including vehicle movement and defending your home, through to small unit tactics. These small unit tactics require the training of tactical teams and would form the basis of a group that you would use to conduct operations post SHTF to defend your location, compound or small town. This compendium of infantry, special operations and close protection tactics will seriously enhance your ability to survive.

The novels provide not only a riveting storyline but also walk you through the application of tactical knowledge in a descriptive scenario. There is a lot to learn from these fictionalized stories!
