As has recently been pointed out many of us have been involved in various Operations.

But there was a whole world of experience before the GWOT.

I thought it might be interesting to review some of our collective history prior to GWOT.

The internet is a vast resource of various videos covering this.

If you were involved in any applicable Operations and know of videos or documentaries covering it please considering posting it.

You don’t have to describe your involvement and you didn’t have to be boots on the ground, if you fueled the helo that went on the mission it’s good enough for this look at our history.

Not the exact Operation I was looking for, but still interesting.

Related to above was Operation Prime Chance.

Interesting topic. Thanks. Lots of forgotten already. Watched the vid on the 80s panama deal the other day. Never realized what that was all about.

Will have to come back to this. May add some insight to what today is.

My time in the Suck was 81-85 and it was usually an endless loop of combined arms racing up the Delta corridor at 29 Palms with the occasional break of seaborne and helicopter insertion on Red or White beaches at Pendelton.

At the time of Mad Man Hussein invading Kuwait a guy I worked with said that the US forces would get their asses handed to them. Of course I knew better and correctly bet that the Iraqis were little better than trench or ditch decorations in waiting.

I also guess that the American Empire’s take over of the ME was a long planned event.

The following are not short videos, I include them mostly for those either too young to remember or those that weren’t a participant in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. These videos do a excellent job of covering the many diverse topics relating to Operation Desert Storm.

Fast attack submarines are not only OPFOR missile submarines hunter/killers, but also intelligence gathering platforms. They do not always operate in the middle of the ocean but gather intell, mostly electronic, in areas that would be considered hostile even in peace time.

First one is my team and the Hungarians we jumped with.

Second one is me receiving Hungarian jump wings.

August 1996 in Hungary. That’s me.

We went to Hungary from Bosnia to train with Hungarian SF. Also to get current on jump operations.

First pic-Crossing the Sava River into Bosnia from Croatia. We crossed on a pontoon bridge as all of the bridges had been blown during the war. What you see is one of the boats used to push the bridge back up stream and keep it stable against the current.

Second pic-Kitted up for the first jump in almost a year. Taken in Hungary.

Third pic-Just returned from a recce patrol. We were looking for guys that would walk up to the wire of the camp and shoot off an AK mag into the perimeter.

This is one of the mass graves that we located using intelligence assets. The guy you see in the picture is taking pictures with the then new digital technology. It recorded time/date stamp and 10 digit grid on the photos. Those cameras were big compared to what we have now.

That grave had between 50 and 75 bodies.

First Pic-Main square in Srebrenicia. You can see the damage to the building behind me. All of the buildings had damage ranging from small arms to artillery.

Looking down into Srebrenicia. The town is in a valley. The Serbs cordoned off the town and brought in artillery on the hilltops and ridge lines around the town. The pounded it with everything. Along the road this picture was taken you could still see the dunnage from all of the artillery rounds fired. Most of the positions had piles 20’Lx20″Wx15’H.

It’s a sad story, but it’s important that we don’t forget.

First pic-BTR-80. Russian APC. This belonged to the Russian Airborne brigade that was in Bosnia as part of IFOR. We sometimes did joint patrols with them. Working with them destroyed any illusions I had about how good the Russians were. They were supposed to be one of the top units from Russia. Several of them were Afghan vets. They stayed drunk.

Second pic-Another mass grave. This one was a the base of a damn. You are looking down on it. This grave had between 200-250 bodies in it.

Third pic- The lake in the background had provided potable water to the area. It was undrinkable. It had been purposely contaminated with dead bodies, trash and discarded munitions to force the local population to leave.

First pic-This house was across the road from one of the execution sights that I described in the other thread. The inside of the house also had discarded luggage, clothing, pictures and money. It was also full of expended cases. From what we could piece together, several shooters set up in the windows and opened fire on the people in the field across the street. From things we were told, other atrocities took place in the bedrooms of the house. Use your own imagination.

Second pic-Winter time in the mountains. I am standing up, so is my TL next to me. He is just a little bit shorter than me.

Third pic-Summertime in the mountains. We would get a patrol together and go to one of the swimming holes that we found. Half of the patrol would pull guard while the other half swam and goofed off. Then we would switch. This was while we were working on that mountain I discussed in the other thread.

How this dog, and the one that got here pregnant, ended up deep in the mountains, god only knows. They took up with us. We fed and watered them. She slept in the tents with us. We all got up at different times during the night due to guard duty and radio watch. She would jump up on the cot of whoever went to sleep first and go to sleep. As that person got up for guard, she would jump down, go outside and do her business and then come back in and jump onto the cot of whoever was just laying down. She triggered a mine not long after this picture was taken. Our medic did everything he could to save her. We buried here on that mountain.

The ICTY had their own security. Contractors before anybody knew what the hell that was. We would escort those guys to the mass graves. They would then excavate them and transport the bodies back to Tuzla for autopsy and hopefully identification.

The majority of the security guys were all former FFL. I can’t remember the name of the company now though.

Of course the Comsymps in congress figured that out right away and sent down some people to count bullets.
