I need a couple of new, merino wool base layer tops. Any recommendations?

I got some Minus33 stuff off amazon. Not the cheapest option, but seems well made, and is holding up well after a couple of winters of use.

Does the wool work better then Under Armor base layers?

                          Smartwool. Also their socks.

Wool will still keep you warm even if it’s wet. Still retains 80% of it’s insulating properties.

                              Way better.

The silk weight base layer that the military issues is a vast improvement, before that there was no base layer issued, but it is a man made material. Wool feels better against your skin after wearing for a long time. And it doesn’t hold the stink in after being worn for a long period of time. Same with the socks.

Thanks, all! Yeah, I’ll probably go with Smartwool. I’m a fan of their socks. I just hadn’t thought about them for base layers. Also, for socks, no sock will out wear those of Darn Tough.

Would you recommend the light or mid weight stuff for mourning put in Texas? Average temps can be anywhere from 10-30degrees.

Morning put? Don’t know what that is.

For those temps, it depends on whether you are static or mobile.

Makes a difference if hiking to the blind or sitting on the blind. Was taught in Tactical Medicine, sitting still you had to dress as if it were 10 degrees colder (in winter).

For that I would use the lightweight stuff. It may cold when you start, but you will warm up. Just don’t over heat.
