“Researchers report that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that gives the plant its characteristic odor, is about ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET — the compound used in most commercial insect repellents.”
Yes I thought the same thing about the cat groupies. But in a SHTF situation it may be a handy herb to distill for use in locations that are bad for mossies and the diseases they can carry. In northern Australia we have to worry about malaria and all the way down the east coast of Australia we get Ross River Fever which can have debilitating effects for years. Then there is another condition that mossies spread that leads to a form of encephalitis of the brain.
The catnip mix seems like it may have possibilities. Down in the Rio Grande Valley mosquitoes at timeswere horrendous on the river. They would suck blood through jeans. The humidity would wash OFF off of you just with sweat in about 15 minutes, but the smell of OFF could compromise your lay in spot.
I worried more about occasional inquisitive skunks checking out my position than the skeeters. Disease wasn’t an issue except from ticks.
